Fast Grip Ensures Accessibility for AllFebruary 2004Ronadeck Fast Grip was recently specified for the pathways of a 'sensory garden' at The Brite Initiative in Scotland. Designed by students from Stevenson College, their brief was to ensure that the garden can be enjoyed, in equal measure, by all members of the college community. To ensure adherence to the 2003 introduction of Part IV of the Disability Discrimination Act relating to education facilities, and to comply with the introduction of Part III of the Act coming into force this year, pathways were made wheelchair accessible and materials were carefully selected to ensure their suitability for all user groups. |

"The Enterprise Skills course students, who have personal experience of disability, undertook to transform an area of bare ground between our training centre and Stevenson College, as part of their project work,"
"The garden makeover featured on BBC Scotland programme 'The Beechgrove Garden'. The programme helped the students turn their plans into reality and we now have a beautiful, colourful and scented garden, accessible to visitors and students from both the college and the centre." Castle Contracting was asked by main contractors, Land Engineering, to specify a suitable slip-resistant surface for the pathways. Alan Ford states: "We selected Ronadeck Fast Grip from Ronacrete because it is a hard-wearing, slip-resistant, resin-bonded aggregate that is naturally decorative and suitable for garden environments. We used Ronacrete's self-smoothing mortar, Monoset RXT, to level out the paving substrate and then applied Fast Grip Resin, in a buff colour, to the surface – onto which we broadcast golden pea aggregate." |

| Ronadeck Fast Grip is a resin bonded aggregate surface for foot and vehicle traffic, suitable for external and internal applications. It is a highly slip-resistant surface in both wet and dry conditions and can be used on steps, paths, ramps, driveways, balconies, car parks and factory floors. It is an easy to apply and versatile system that can assist education providers and commercial companies to comply with the demands listed within the current regulation of Part IV, and Part III of the DDA coming into force on 1st October 2004. | |

About the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 1995 to introduce new measures aimed at ending the discrimination which many disabled people face. It protects disabled people in the areas of employment, access to goods, facilities and services, management, buying or renting of land or property and education. On the introduction of Part III in October 2004 private and commercial business and services will have to make reasonable adjustments to the physical features of their premises to overcome physical barriers to access. For education providers, new duties came into effect in September 2002 and September 2003 under Part IV of the DDA as amended by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA). These require schools, colleges, universities, providers of adult education and youth services to ensure that they do not discriminate against disabled people. |
