Hi,

I am planning a gravel path for the garden and the plan is to edge it with 100mm granite cubes, one edge being against the lawn (finishing 4-5cm above lawn level). Gravel will finish at same level as lawn so setts contain it (hopefully)!

Just have 2 questions:

1) Regarding bedding material for the setts, should the concrete mix be just sharp sand & cement or should I add a fine (10mm) aggregate too? Seems from the website that either can be used?

2) The channel I have dug is just over 150mm deep. Would it be best to lay the concrete for bedding directly onto sub grade/ soil below to give a good 100mm depth below the setts or should I lay a thin layer hardcore first then concrete approx 50mm on top of this? Either way I will then top up the hardcore to 100mm for the gravel.

Cheers,

Dan

1) yep! Either can be used in a lightweight setting such as this.

2) Lay concrete first, then infill with sub-base - the key arguments are discussed here - I *know* that page talks about block pavers but the principles are the same.

Hi again,

I’ve pretty much laid all the setts now. Just been thinking about pointing them. As they are in a single line I guess hand pointing with 1 cement: 4 sand mix is my best option?

Will try and post a picture later.

Thanks,

Dan

Yep - tedious, back-breaking, wrist-aching, soul-destroying hand pointing is, annoyingly, the best option.
